MAFIC is located on the campus of China Agriculture University (CAU), and senior staff of the Department of Education and Research are university faculty. As such, they are committed to teaching courses in animal nutrition and feed processing technology to students seeking a diploma or bachelor, master, or doctoral degree in the College of Animal Science and Technology at CAU. Lectures on these same topics are also given at other universities and colleges upon request.
This department lies at the core of MAFIC's activities and has a defining influence on our approach to education, training and consultancy. Our research program includes both basic and applied research in animal nutrition. In basic research, our approach is multidisciplinary. Drawing from nutrition, immunology, microbiology and biochemistry, we explore areas such as nutritional metabolism, the relationship between nutrition and immunity, the relationship between nutrition and gut morphology, and nutrient requirements. In our applied research, we strive to create new technical information to satisfy the continuous demand of China's feed industry in the areas of feedstuffs, feed evaluation, and feed additives. Our research on feedstuffs to date has focused on feed nutrition inhibitors, the biological utilization rate of feedstuffs, and the nutritional value and safety of feedstuffs. In the area of feed additives, we have concentrated on developing new feed ingredients and feed additives by fermentation and chemical synthesis technology, such as feed enzymes and Chinese herb extracts.
Staff and Facilities: The Education and Research Department is staffed with two Professors, five associate professors, three post-doctorates, and ten guest professors who work with approximately twenty-five doctoral and master's students. Facilities include a 150 m2 swine metabolic unit and a 200 m2 poultry metabolic unit. In addition, the research unit conducts research at two cooperating pig farms and has access to the services of the laboratory at MAFIC, which is recognized as
a Key open Laboratory for Animal Nutrition by the Ministry of Agriculture.
